Kent Family YMCA

An integrated recreation facility within an expanded park.

The Kent YMCA is a new 51,000 sf community and recreational facility being constructed in partnership with the City of Kent.  The Y is the focal point of a redeveloped site that joins two smaller parks and enhances recreational activities for a fast-growing area of the City.  The new Y includes community meeting rooms, intergenerational gathering space for teens and seniors, a demonstration kitchen for healthy eating programs and family support spaces for infants and children.  Aquatic facilities include a lap pool, leisure pool, and spa/therapy pool.  Recreational facilities include two basketball courts and four fitness studios.  The design team worked closely with the City of Kent design team to stitch the building into the fabric of the overall site development and to create opportunities for interaction between indoor and outdoor activities.  Large sliding doors link the Y’s meeting rooms and informal gathering spaces to a plaza that is the ‘front porch’ for the community.  The plaza contains fixed and movable seating, game tables and atmospheric lighting to create flexibility for informal use and scheduled events.  The project achieved LEED v4 Silver.
