West Seattle YMCA Renovation and Expansion

An open and visible addition in a growing neighborhood that ties into the community fabric.

The West Seattle YMCA was constructed on a full city block in 1984. In the ensuing years the West Seattle ‘Triangle’ area grew up around the YMCA, and the facility expanded operations into leased space in surrounding buildings to meet the demands of growing membership. The expansion project allows for operations to be consolidated into a single, efficiently staffed and operated facility. The expansion provides 15,000 sf of new fitness rooms, and remodels the northwest corner into a Family Wing providing age-related recreation and support programs for infants through tweeners. The expansion provided the opportunity for the Y to create a more inviting face to the West Seattle community. The building addition brings views of the Y’s activities to the street, and provides generous daylighting of the primary fitness areas. Opportunities in the project included new entry court and frontage improvements to create a city-designated Festival Street for special events, and renewing play areas for the Family Wing.
