We concentrate on the themes of learning, community, and health, building consensus through creative design work. Backed by a thoughtful, personal approach, we leverage direct principal involvement, allowing design team members to engage and learn from our leadership group while providing clients the expertise of principal support and dedication from day one through opening day.

Who We Are

We are responsive, energetic, inventive, and focused on developing meaningful relationships. Designers who love to draw as much as we embrace the process, we dig deeper to fully understand where our project partners are coming from and how to creatively deliver on their vision.

Rigorous in execution, but flexible in our approach, our team consists of versatile architects who love to do it all. Open to new ideas and always learning, our team feels empowered to expand beyond their comfort zones and endeavor to find new ways to be the best steward of our client's resources, the project site, surrounding community, and the environment.

How We Work

We are expert listeners, thoughtful explorers, and nimble designers. We build upon our technical expertise while encouraging "big picture" design opportunities to support our client's mission and goals.

At Miller Hayashi we are committed to our client's needs and project goals from the “what do we need now” to the “what do we envision for the future”. As project partners, we recognize the importance of building connections, often within a constellation of stakeholder groups, establishing a successful communication plan around areas of interest, cultural significance, and values. Our design approach explores the creative use of natural light, the use of materials with engaging sensory qualities, and the consideration of architectural scale as it relates to a person’s sense of comfort.

"Collaboration is the culture at Miller Hayashi. We have partnered on both design-bid-build and design-build projects and have worked efficiently regardless of contract type because Miller Hayashi’s team members are always open to input and doing what it takes to make the project successful. Communication flows easily–be that from picking up the phone, answering a text, or walking the jobsite to come up with a solution in the field."

Equity & Sustainability

We believe society is rebuilt with each generation, and that each value we care about seeks renewal in a changing world. Our firm was founded on the principal that enhancing environmental and civic values represents the highest purpose of architecture.

We're committed to making spaces accessible and welcoming for all people, regardless of their gender, race, culture, or difference in ability. We work to create designs that improve interactions and prioritize empathy and understanding. We are always working to make our organization more socially just and equitable.

Having delivered one of the first LEED Gold projects owned by the City of Seattle, sustainable design is a core promise of our practice. We continue to consistently meet or exceed LEED requirements on many of our projects. We take seriously our responsibility to protect the environment through reducing negative impacts, protecting the health and well-being of users, and improving energy and building performance.

M/WBE Outreach

We partner with a wide network of multi-disciplinary teams and understand the key role of the many subconsultants that are integral to our practice. A self-identified MBE, we are proud of the diversity of thought and perspective represented in our leadership team and firm. We recognize the continued importance of actions that foster social equity. Within our organization and on every project we join, we're committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive community, work force, and professional culture.

We engage in outreach to include diverse businesses certified by the State of Washington Office of Minority and Women's Business Enterprises (OMWBE) on our project teams and encourage interested engineers and designers to get in touch to explore future opportunities.

AWARD-WINNING DESIGN

West Seattle Elementary School featured as a 2024 Outstanding Project in Learning By Design Awards of Excellence Showcase

Miller Hayashi partnered with Seattle Public Schools to design a new, 20,000-square-foot, two-story addition to West Seattle Elementary School. To best serve the school's growing, vibrant community, we set out early to connect with West Seattle Elementary School's educational team—including administrators and teachers, as well as representatives from students and families—to really understand the values of their community and their priorities for the project.
