Epstein Opportunity Center
Reimagining an historic landmark as a hub for learning, connection, and community.
The Epstein Opportunity Center was constructed as the Yesler Terrace Steam Plant in 1941 to provide district heating for the Yesler Terrace housing development. The building was designated a Seattle Landmark in 2011. The adaptive re-use and expansion project repurposes the long-unused concrete structure for community programs including Head Start, Youth Tutoring, Job Connections and meeting rooms.
The adaptive re-use design creates flexible space and mixing zones that celebrate the unique character and history of the concrete structure. The addition encloses a rooftop children’s play area and provides accessible entrances, vertical circulation and a public service core.
