Daniel Bagley Elementary School
Bringing contemporary learning spaces to a 1930s historic landmark.
Miller Hayashi led the design for the renovation and expansion of the historic landmarked Daniel Bagley Elementary. The project incorporated new energy efficient building systems, life safety improvements, accessibility upgrades, and building envelope rehabilitation. Spaces were reorganized to accommodate new programs and teaching technology and to improve school safety and supervision. Displacement ventilation was implemented for occupant health and thermal comfort. The new addition was design to an EUI of 27. The addition fits into neighborhood context and is respectful of the historic building. Bagley historically used their wide main hallway as a non-traditional learning space. This project enhanced and formalized that unique aspect of the school with new alcoves that fit with in the ‘breathing walls’ of the historic building.
